Utau Tsukiyomi is a fifteen year old girl in high school who dreams of becoming a singer. She is also one of the main supporting characters in the series.

Background

Utau is a professional singer who is signed by Easter. However, she does not sing simply because it's her dream, she sings because her shugo chara powers can help her extract X eggs from children whenever they hear her singing. She did not wish for singing to be used for horrible deeds, but she forces herself to do it for her brother, and true love, Ikuto.

Utau has been trapped by Easter all her life, just like Ikuto. Ever since their mother married their step-father, they have been forced to work for Easter, the company that their mother owned, but their step-father took over. They each have specific jobs in the company. Utau's job is to extract X eggs from childrens' hearts with her songs, but when none of them end up being the Embryo, it's Ikuto's job to be the clean-up crew, destroying the eggs so that it'll narrow down the search for the Embryo.

Even though Utau follows the commands of Easter willingly, she has a secret goal in mind. She is determined to find the Embryo so she can make a wish on it to set Ikuto free from the company. The one thing that hurts Utau the most is knowing that Ikuto is being forced against his will to do the evil deeds of Easter. He can't escape, and therefore must continue to work until his body is worn down. He was even banned from playing the violin, his one true passion, in order to have more time to work for Easter. Because of this, Utau dedicates all of her time and energy into finding the Embryo so she can end Ikuto's suffering. To her, Ikuto is everything, she would risk her life countless times just to save his. Her love for him knows no bounds, she even risked going on the side of evil for him.

Utau became more serious about her mission to help Ikuto after episode 29 when she first character-transformed with X-Dia, giving her an extra powerful form: Dark Jewel. She used this transformation in all of her fights against Amu in order to win and get her out of her way so she could get to the Embryo faster. From then on, she was serious all the time and wasted no time at all, except when she was with Ikuto, of course. Then she would go into cutesy-mode and hug him tightly, telling him that she missed him.

Utau nearly lost it in the final battle of the first season when she battled against Amu. She yelled at Amu for not being able to understand what she was going through to help Ikuto. Then, she used two of her shugo charas, Iru and X-Dia, to fight against Amu. However, both Iru and X-Dia left Utau to fight for Amu. After all her shugo charas let her down and she lost the fight, she fell to the floor, claiming to not be able to move, and cried about how no one loved her anymore. Amu then spoke to her about how she shouldn't push herself so hard, and if she relaxed a little and had some fun, she would be a lot happier. Everyone then persuaded her to sing, not for Ikuto, but for herself. After looking over at Ikuto, and him giving her the go-ahead, Utau smiled and began singing a song she wrote when she was a little girl. After she finished the song, she smiled brightly, gaining more confidence in herself, and knowing that she should sing for her own happiness, and not just for Ikuto. Ikuto smiled at her later and told her that she can now sing for her own happiness, this caused Utau to smile and blush, knowing that Ikuto was proud of her.

In the second season, Utau was shown quitting Easter and going off on her own, along with her manager, Sanjo-san; to go make a living doing concerts by her rules, not Easter's. However, since they quit Easter, they no longer had Easter's financial support or advertising. This forced them to move into a cheap office building and make Utau herself go around to TV stations and radios and beg them to play her song. After all of the stations refused, Utau had to settle for singing in the park, where they couldn't charge anyone to listen. However, after singing in the park for long enough, Utau gained her fans back, and therefore, they were able to move Utau's concerts to somewhere more suitable. From then on, Utau performed in a small club downtown, which earned her and Sanjo-san some money to pay for advertising and staff. After numerous shows at the small club, Utau and Sanjo-san had enough money to pay for an entire entertainment staff who took care of the lights, the sound, the mixing, and just about everything else. Utau's concerts were also moved to an actual concert hall that could hold up to a thousand people. This is where she performed her shows from then on.

Utau appeared again for the final battle of the second season. She came to help the Guardians rescue Ikuto from Easter, and she helped them by fighting a black, X-egg dog that was created by Easter with Yaya. She and Yaya stalled the dog long enough for Amu and Tadase to run past it to go rescue Ikuto. She was seen again later when they finally rescued Ikuto and were then going to go find the boss of Easter and take him down. Utau talked to Ikuto, urging him to go fight, that she would be alright. Ikuto then realized all of the things that Utau had done for him since then. He had been so blinded from them before that he took her for granted. After he realized all she had done for him, he smiled and thanked her for everything, telling her that he would gain his freedom on his own now, that she didn't have to push herself any longer. Utau then blushed and smiled, happy that he acknowledged her.

Style

Determinedutau

Utau was mostly seen in expensive, gothic-lolita clothes in the first season. All of her dresses had frills and bows but were also dark and mysterious. However, she only wore these outfits because it was part of her image as a singer of Easter. She she was so mysterious and her songs were so dark, her whole wardrobe, which was bought by Easter, was filled with gothic-lolita dresses. However, when she wasn't making public appearances for Easter, or when she was rehearsing one of her songs, she was seen wearing her actual style, which is actually a casual pair of pants or capris and a fashionable shirt.

In the second season, after Utau had quit Easter, she was never seen wearing gothic-lolita dresses again. From then on, she was always wearing fashionable clothes that she loved and were easy to walk around in. She also was seen having a different hairstyle every episode she was shown in. She was never shown wearing her plain, straight, pigtails anymore. Instead, she added interesting things like orange ribbons braided through her pigtails, her pigtails being curled, and her pigtails being braided. So even though she changed up her style, she still kept the same old style of keeping her hair in pigtails.

Shugo Charas

Iru

Iru

Iru is Utau's devil shugo chara and represents her dream to be a spunky rockstar with an attitude.

Iru is Utau's main shugo chara since she uses her more in transformations. Iru was also used more because it was her powers that helped Utau extract X-Eggs for Easter. She was also the only shugo chara who was actually on board with working for Easter, whereas, Eru thought it was wrong, and therefore didn't do anything to help Easter.

Iru's main hobby is picking on Eru. Since it's so easy to make Eru cry, and Iru loves to cause pain to others, she is always seen kicking Eru and teasing her in order to make her cry. However, she took her for granted, and when Eru left to go join Amu, Iru felt lonely and wished for Eru back, not because she wanted to tease her, but because she really loved her as a sister.

Iru was the only one to stick by Utau when she ignored her other two shugo charas and focused on X-Dia. Although it pissed her off, Iru remained by Utau's side, and continued to try to persuade her to use her in a character transformation.

Iru only left Utau once, and that was in the final battle of the first season. Iru had agreed that Utau had gone too far with her ambitions, and therefore character transformed with Amu to create Amulet Devil. After the battle, however, Iru returned to Utau's side.

Eru

Eru

Eru is Utau's angel shugo chara and represents her dream to be a sweet, kind, and caring angel of love.

Although Eru is also Utau's shugo chara, Utau barely pays any attention to her. Even though she was born from Utau's dream, Utau finds her useless because she can't help her at all and seems too different from Utau, which is why Utau spends more time with her spunky, devil counterpart, Iru. Although she takes this neglected relationship from Utau, she still stays by her side and loves her. That is, until she finally couldn't take it anymore and left her to be with Amu. However, it was a fair trade, since Eru went to Amu, X-Dia, Amu's shugo chara, went to Utau. Eru hoped and hoped that Utau would eventually miss her and want her to come back, but this never happened. She even character transformed with Amu and fought against Utau in attempt for Utau to be jealous, but it didn't work because she knew that Eru was a weak shugo chara and she still had two powerful shugo charas by her side.

Eru eventually went back to Utau after the final battle of season one. Utau, who had gained confidence in herself and was happier, accepted Eru back with open arms and treated her with a lot more respect.

Character Transformations

Lunatic Charm

Untitledlunaticcharm

When Utau character transforms with Iru, she becomes Lunatic Charm.

Lunatic Charm is Utau's first and most frequently used character transformation. Since the transformation is with Iru, and Iru is a strong shugo chara, Utau used her instead of her weak, peaceful shugo chara, Eru.

Lunatic Charm was first used when Easter ordered Utau to fight against Amu. She immediatly character transformed and attacked Amu, but quickly switched out of her transformation when Ikuto showed up since she was much too involved with hugging him than on keeping the transformation going.

Utau was seen transforming into Lunatic Charm once again in episode 29 when she had to attack Amu again. However, she quickly traded Iru out for X-Dia when X-Dia finally hatched from her egg. Utau then transformed with X-Dia to create Dark Jewel. From then on, throughout that one season, Utau ignored Iru and only used X-Dia's transformation.

After season one, and Dia had gone back to Amu, Utau started transforming into Lunatic Charm again, far more frequently than Seraphic Charm.

Seraphic Charm

78-1

When Utau character transforms with Eru, she becomes Seraphic Charm.

Utau first transformed into Seraphic Charm in the final battle of the first season when Utau saw her manager, Sanjo-san, hanging from a helicopter, about to fall off. She quickly transformed into Seraphic Charm and used her new flying abilities to fly up to the helicopter and catch Sanjo-san, gently carrying her to the ground.

When Utau is in this form, she has the ability to sing a peaceful lullaby which can purify hundreds of X-Eggs and send them back to their original hearts. Because of this, Utau is revealed to be the only person, other than Amu, who can purify X-Eggs. She even has more power and control over her healing abilities that she can purify hundreds of X-Eggs at a time, whereas, Amu can only purify one at a time.

Utau will only use Seraphic Charm when she needs to purify a large number of eggs since all of Seraphic Charm's attacks are very weak. When Utau needs to attack something or someone, she will transform into Lunatic Charm to attack them.

Dark Jewel

Utau

When Utau character transforms with X-Dia, she becomes Dark Jewel.

Utau first transformed into Dark Jewel in episode 29 when X-Dia first hatched. After X-Dia hatched, she immediatly took it upon herself to transform with Utau to become Dark Jewel and fight against her original owner, Amu. Although Utau was surpised at the transformation, after seeing how powerful X-Dia was, Utau decided to keep X-Dia as her main shugo chara, tossing Iru aside. For every battle forward, Utau transformed into Dark Jewel to fight, using powerful attacks such as, "Shining Black!" and her most powerful move, "Glitter Particle!"

Utau is very powerful in this form. She is more powerful in this form than when she is Sepheric Charm. This may be the reason why she used X-Dia for so long. Utau is revealed to be stronger than Amu since she is able to keep up her character transformation with X-Dia longer than Amu can keep her character transformation with Eru.

However, in the final battle of the first season, X-Dia decided to go back to Amu leaving Utau all alone, without any way to defend herself.

Relationships

Friends:

  • Amu Hinamori: Although they started out as rivals, and Utau thought of Amu as her greated enemy, after Utau quit Easter, she and Amu became great friends and are often seen hanging out together. A lot of people act surprised and ask how Amu knows Utau, but she has to explain to them that Utau being famous as nothing to do with how they know each other.
  • Tadase Hotori: Utau and Tadase were childhood friends. Although they didn't always get along well when they were kids, they evened out their relationship and returned to their brother-sister relationship
  • Kukai Souma: Utau and Kukai first met when Kukai met up with Amu and happened to meet Utau when she was with her. Kukai then challenged her for a ramen eating contest. Determined not to lose, Utau accepted his challenge, and raced him to the ramen shop. After losing to him, Utau is seen challenging him a lot more during the series, determined to win. However, over that time, they became friends and have been seen hanging out a lot at her concerts. Kukai also helps her cope with not being able to see Ikuto.
  • Yukari Sanjo: Yukari is Utau's manager, and the two are very close. Utau once saved Yukari from falling from a helicopter mid-flight. After quitting Easter, they both went off on their own to start a steady career together as singer and manager.
  • Dia: Because Utau and Dia spent so much time together, they became good friends, and now smile at each other whenever they see each other. Dia is happy that Utau has bloomed from her previous self, and Utau knows this.

Love Life:

Utau hugging Ikuto

Ikuto Tsukiyomi: Ikuto is Utau's older brother, but she fell in love with him at a young age. It was never shown how or when she fell in love with Ikuto, but she has been this way for a long time. In the first season, she dedicated everything she did to finding the Embryo so she could make a wish on it to set Ikuto free from Easter. In fact, everything she did was for Ikuto, including singing for Easter. Throughout the first season, she is seen meeting up with him multiple times on the rooftop of the Easter headquarters and hugging Ikuto, telling him to meet her for a date later. In episode 29 of the anime, Ikuto and Utau even kissed twice. Although Ikuto seems to ignore Utau, this is only because he wants her to spread her wings and not depend on him as much. Utau finally achieved this in the last big battle of the first season when she decided that she would sing because it would make her happy, not just for Ikuto. Later, Ikuto was seen smiling at her and telling her that she could do anything if she stood on her own, showing that he was proud of her. Utau's love for Ikuto continued into the next season: Shugo Chara Doki! In one episode, Utau was preparing for a concert and Amu thought it would be a good idea to get Ikuto to come. When Utau heard of her plan, she became really excited and hearts formed around her head. However, when Amu reported back later, telling Utau that Ikuto wouldn't come, Utau became depressed. Later, while Utau was singing at her concert, the scene

switches to the doorway of the concert hall, to show Ikuto weakly walking in (probably after being beaten up). Even though he was weak and needed to rest, he used all his strength to go see Utau's concert. When Utau noticed him in the crowd, she smiled and reached out to him, blushing. Later, it showed Ikuto on top of the building, in pain. Yoru lectured him about how he shouldn't have gone out when he was weak, but that Utau did seem really happy when she saw him. It showed a picture of Utau singing, then slowly faded out to show Ikuto smiling, knowing that Utau was happy. In another episode, the Valentines Day episode, Utau was seen just finishing a concert. Eru and Iru remained silent, watching Utau's depressed expression as she held a box of chocolates she was going to give to Ikuto for Valentines Day, however, since he was running for Easter, he was no where to be found. Some people have asked why Ikuto didn't stay with Utau while he was running from Easter. This was explained in an episode of Shugo Chara Doki! when Amu asked Ikuto why he hadn't seen Utau. Yoru then yelled out, "Isn't it obvious!? He wants to protect h-" but he was cut off by Ikuto shoving a chip in Yoru's mouth and saying, "I have my reasons." So the whole reason

he stayed away from Utau was to protect her from Easter. Near the end of the second season, Utau was seen protecting Ikuto from the X Eggs so he could go with Amu and Tadase to go see Hikaru. Ikuto then realized all the things that Utau had done for him, and how she dedicated her whole life to him. After realizing this, he smiled and said, "Thank you for everything, Utau. I won't walk blindly anymore, I'll get my freedom with my own hands." Utau blushes at his words and says, "Yeah." with a smile on her face. In the manga, Ikuto is seen petting her head while he says this to her, but this was not shown in the anime. Utau's love for Ikuto continues more in the new manga, Shugo Chara Encore! The whole first chapter was just about Utau being depressed about not being able to see Ikuto. She is even seen checking her phone multiple times and reading the 25 unsent messages that she wanted to send to Ikuto. A few of the text messages were shown in the chapter, and these are what they said: "How are you? I'm working hard on my lessons." "I want to see you." "I love you" and "I really love you." She is seen thinking about erasing them all throughout the chapter because she couldn't bring herself to send such embarrassing texts to Ikuto. She is also seen getting mad at Kukai (who is trying to cheer her up) all throughout the chapter. She continually called him a kid, not being able to understand true love, the love she feels for Ikuto. Finally, Kukai got fed up and kissed Utau, proving that he wasn't a kid. Utau then complained about how he "Totally hit her teeth" and how she doesn't want to kiss him again, but at the end of the chapter, Utau and Kukai are seen as being good friends, and nothing more. This was proven when Utau called him too young, saying that they're three years apart, and if they were dogs, he would be a puppy, and she would be a grown-up dog. Later she said that she likes older guys, meaning Ikuto. In the final chapter of Shugo Chara Encore, Utau makes her final appearance when she and Kukai run into Amu while walking. Utau tells Amu that Ikuto called her yesterday and told her that he would be returning to Japan for the wedding, Utau then said that she would be saving him a seat beside her at the wedding so they could sit together. Utau was then seen being pulled away by Kukai as she yelled out to Amu, "I'm not telling you anything! It's not like you've won him, you know!" Proclaiming her love and protection over Ikuto. Utau and Ikuto made their final appearances at Yukari and Nikkaido's wedding.

Trivia

  • During the first season, Utau only sung one song repeatedly at every concert she performed. In the second season and beyond, she started coming out with new songs to sing at her concerts.
  • Utau has never been seen with her hair down.
  • Ikuto writes all of Utau's songs.
  • Utau takes after her mother since she has blonde hair, and Ikuto takes after his father since he has blue hair.
  • Utay was captured and forced to work for Easter before Ikuto was.
  • Utau gave Amu permission to help her rescue Ikuto in one episode, but took it back later because she felt that Amu couldn't do it after all of her failures.
  • Utau is often mistakenly called "Utau Hoshina" because Hoshina is her stage last name. However, Utau's real name is Utau Tsukiyomi, but since her stage name is Utau Hoshina, many people think that Hoshina is her legal last name, and that this name is written on all documents. To add to this confusion, some shugo chara fans think that Utau is Ikuto's step-sister because many people have told them that Utau's last name is Hoshina when it's really Tsukiyomi, and they think that Utau is the daughter of Kazuomi Hoshina, when she is really the daughter of Aruto Tsukiyomi. It was explained in episode 29 that Utau's real name is Utau Tsukiyomi, and that she is Ikuto's blood related sister.
